Mangrove planting for ecological resilience

Philippine Standard Time:

Mangrove planting for ecological resilience

The crucial role mangrove forests play in the protection and conservation of the coastlines and marine life is what prompted the PDRRMO, PGENRO, and PSWDO to spearhead a Mangrove Planting Program on five (5) sites within the Province (Orani, Samal, Pilar, Abucay, and Orion) from March to April of this year.

Today, March 24, employees from different offices of the Provincial Government of Bataan and beneficiaries of the Cash for Work Program of DSWD joined said activity in Brgy. Pantalan Bago, Orani, the first planting site.

Each planting site has a target number of planted mangrove propagules: 45,000 for Orani, 20,000 for Samal, 40,000 for Pilar, 21,000 for Abucay, and 40,000 for Orion.

Prior to this, employees of PGB attended an orientation last March 20 to have a clear background of the project and learn how to properly plant the propagules.

Highlighted during the orientation is the pressing need for mangrove rehabilitation.

Mangroves not only protect our coasts from natural disasters and calamities, such as erosions, typhoons, and floods, they also purify the air and serve as breeding grounds for some marine animals.

The said planting activity is part of the Risk Resiliency Program – Climate Change Adaptation Management – Disaster Risk Reduction (RRP-CCAM-DRR).
